The EDF Group’s nuclear fleet in France currently comprises 58 reactors spread over 19 sites, including:
- > 34 reactors, each with a capacity of 900 MW;
- > 20 reactors, each with a capacity of 1,300 MW;
- > 4 reactors, each with a capacity of 1,450 MW.
87% of the power generated by EDF in France comes from its nuclear fleet. EDF is an essential partner in the field of nuclear research and development.
The EDF Group provides support and guidance for the development of the nuclear industry in a large number of countries.In China, the Group was involved in the construction of Daya Bay and Ling Ao power plants.
In the United States, the Group has been cooperating with various organizations such as EPRI and INPO for years. Together with the main American operators, it is a member of the NuStart consortium, the aim of which is to revitalize the nuclear industry in the USA. The Group recently signed a framework cooperation agreement with Constellation Energy, for the development of EPR-type nuclear power plants in the United States.
In Germany, the Group is a key shareholder in EnBW, which operates 3 nuclear power plants.In France, the construction of the first EPR on the Flamanville site is underway. The unit is expected to come on line in 2012. The EPR is EDF's design of choice for renewing its nuclear fleet when current units have ended their service life.
On January 2009, the French President confirmed the building of a second EPR in France, run by EDF. The Penly site in Seine-Maritime has all the technical characteristics required for a new reactor using the EPR technology. The construction is scheduled to be launched by EDF in 2012.
